Disease on Pachysandra #574635

Asked June 27, 2019, 1:09 PM EDT

Hi! I'm having trouble identifying an issue with my pachysandra - I can't tell if it's alfalfa mosaic virus, volutella blight, or boxwood blight. Any suggestions on how to address?

Expert Response

This native Alleghany pachysandra has a yet-unidentified leaf spot disease.

We invite you to mail us a sample of the leaves so that our University experts can isolate the disease organisms.  Please do not mail in a baggie or other plastic, as that will cause it to decompose before it gets here.
You also may want to pull the mulch back 3-4 inches from the base of the plants.

At this time, leave it alone to grow during the summer and build up root reserves.  Next spring, practice good garden sanitation: just before new growth emerges, cut off all the infected leaves and dispose of them off site.

We hope to see your plant sample and will contact you with our findings. Our address is: Home & Garden Information Center, 12005 Homewood Road, Ellicott city, MD 21042.  Attention: Dr. David Clement
