spots on basil and marigold leaves #574493

Asked June 26, 2019, 8:37 PM EDT

Hello! Wondering what this is and if the basil leaves are still edible. (not sure if the same thing is causing the spots on the basil and marigold leaves, but they look similar)

Hennepin County Minnesota

Expert Response

These two plants are among the favorite food of four lined plant bugs.Four-lined plant bug nymphs are bright red to orange in color. Adults are greenish-yellow with four black stripes running along the wings. Look for insects or damage caused by them in late May and early June. Look carefully as four-lined plant bugs may drop to the ground or hide when disturbed. Insecticidal soap can be effective against the immature nymphs. The product has to come in contact with insects and repeat treatments may be needed. A variety of longer lasting pesticides are available:
permethrin, bifenthrin, lambda-cyhalothrin, acetamiprid, and carbaryl. Cut down host plants in the fall to remove eggs that may have been inserted into them.
