What's wrong with my Black Hills Spruce trees? #573863
Asked June 25, 2019, 9:38 AM EDT
I have recently planted some Black Hills Spruce trees and it looks like the ends of the new growth needles are starting to turn a yellowish/tan color... they are not dry to the touch, but actually soft. Am i over watering? Under watering? is this a soil type issue? too much sun? I just want to make sure i don't kill these. Please help if you can.
ALSO, the rubber mats around the tree DO allow for water to pass through, they are basically like a rubber multch. But i could try wood chips instead if you think this is an issue?

Hello,
I am noticing that the shoots have turned almost a bleached white color. This is not a sign of overwatering. Furthermore, spruces do like full sun. These symptoms remind me of herbicide damage. We do have herbicides that inhibit the production of the green pigment, chlorophyll, in plants. Don't worry--I am not judging you. Herbicides can be introduced through a variety of ways. Herbicides can drift from neighboring properties or lawn care companies can get too close to trees. Do you know what herbicides and crabgrass preventers that have been applied to your lawn this year? Or is there the possibility of herbicide drift from a neighboring property or farm?
