Spring weed identification #572871

Asked June 22, 2019, 7:53 AM EDT

Hello, Hello. Please help me to identify this pesky spreading weed that takes over several areas of my turf grass. If you are able to identify, what herbicide is needed to kill it without harming existing turf? Thank you.

Union County North Carolina

Expert Response

From the photos it looks like nimblewill, but it might also be Bermuda.  Both are grassy weeds that invade turfgrass. Here are two links to information, photos, and management recommendations from North Carolina State University Turffiles website:  https://www.turffiles.ncsu.edu/weeds-in-turf/nimblewill/; https://www.turffiles.ncsu.edu/grasses/bermudagrass/.

If you are not able to determine which you may have, you can bring a sample (6” square) to my office at 3230 Presson Rd, Monroe, NC  for positive identification.

Hi Debbie,

Thank you for your response.  I'm impressed with the quick turnaround.

It seems we've narrowed it down to 2 possible invaders.  One having a selective herbicide, the other a non-selective.  I dug out a section of it again and took a few photos in hopes that it may be more helpful in determining which one it is.  Would you please take a look and see if we can identify its true identity?

Thanks much,
 Steve

Steve,

It is Bermuda grass (often called wiregrass when unwanted weed!).  This grass spreads by both above ground stolons that root at nodes when they come in contact with the soil and rhizomes that are underground stems that send up new shoots.

Because Bermuda is an aggressive perennial, control is not easy.  Here is a link with recommendations for mechanical and chemical control:  https://www.turffiles.ncsu.edu/grasses/bermudagrass/.  Scroll down on the page for information on managing Bermuda when it is a weed.
