Red Maple bark splitting #572573

Asked June 20, 2019, 9:58 PM EDT

Can you tell me why my tree bark is splitting. Is there anything I can do to repair it. Thank you. The second picture is of the tree, you can see the dark area on the right hand side, that is where the bark is splitting.

Expert Response

Extremely cold temperatures or rapid temperature changes in winter may be responsible for the crack in trunk of the maple tree.

There is nothing that can be done to help the tree deal with its injury.  The tree will have to deal with its injury as best it can by itself.  Do not remove the bark around the crack or attempt to paint the damaged area.
