I have purchased a home in Fallon, Nevada. I have a back yard with nothing planted in it for 15 years. The soil is pretty compacted. I wondered what types of trees that I could plant in the yard. What kind of digging and fertilization do I have to do in order to have some success in planting?

Expert Response
Depending on the what type of trees you would like to have there are several options.
First, I would look at your soils. If you see a white crust on the soil you may consider doing a soil test to see how high of a salt level you have. If you do not see crusting then hopefully it does not have a pH higher than 8. Now you can focus on what characteristics you would like and how much water you are able to provide. Look around the neighbourhood and is if there are trees that are doing well and that you like. If you do not know what kind they are you can submit a photo and we can probably identify it.
I have attached several information sheets that will help provide you with some options.
