diseased peonies #570377

Asked June 14, 2019, 3:25 PM EDT

Hello, I've uploaded two photos, hopefully sufficient evidence for an ID. These resulting black, wilted buds are on plants that look beautiful and healthy. The same thing has happened on roses nearby, and roses nowhere near. Also on one columbine, and one clematis that are elsewhere in the garden, and near each other, but no evidence on the multitude of other plants mixed in with them. Any ideas? I live and garden in south MInneapolis. Thank you for your time and trouble. I look forward to hearing from you. Maggie Dolan

It could be gray mold. Here is a link to look at and compare to your plants. https://extension.umn.edu/plant-diseases/gray-mold-flower-garden

Thank you, Sherry.  I opened the link and looked at all the pix and it seems like a fit.  We did a lot of "rearranging" of the garden last year to clear out an invasive ground cover.  All the perennials were jostled and shifted in sometimes radical ways!  So to imagine them getting injured, thus making them vulnerable in this cool, wet spring, is not a stretch.
Thanks for your time and trouble!
