A magnolia tree that looks dead #567410

Asked June 05, 2019, 9:17 AM EDT

My magnolia tree did not flower, nor does it have leaves yet. It has what appear to be small white buds that did not open. Also, last late summer, the bark had a sticky substance covering it. What is happening? Thank you for your help.

Expert Response

It could be suffering from winter damage. Magnolias are relatively hardy here but if yours is an older tree it may have suffered a lot of damage from a very harsh winter. Newer varieties are hardier not completely hardy if the winter is very cold. The sticky bark is a sign of magnolia scale. https://www.mortonarb.org/trees-plants/tree-and-plant-advice/help-pests/magnolia-scale-neolecanium-cornuparvum
