Black marks and red dots on sugar maple leaves #565895

Asked May 30, 2019, 5:11 PM EDT

All the maple trees in this area are full of black marks on the leaves and little red dots too. Should I treat them with something?

Expert Response

Hi. The trees have anthracnose, and there is nothing to be done to control it. The tree will not die from this fungal issue, anthracnose is weather related. It often happens when there has been a wet, cool spring. If leaves fall off just clean them and dispose in the trash. The red bumps are likely galls caused by a small insect, a mite. There is nothing to treat in this instance either.
