Asked May 28, 2019, 11:50 AM EDT

Need your help. Last year one of our Linden tree had half of it leaves and drop them early. This year the tree looks dead. Now my 2nd Linden tree has about half of it leaves. I do not want to loose it. What do I do? Belmond, IA

Expert Response

Something has negatively impacted the health of the linden tree in the photos.  Sparse foliage (fewer leaves than normal) is a symptom of a tree under stress.  However, the factor or factors responsible for the stress are not visible in the photos.  An insect or disease is probably not responsible for the tree's stress.

The best course of action is to attempt to prevent any additional stress to the tree.  Water the tree if we experience a long hot, dry stretch this summer.  Refrain from any action around the tree (such as trenching, construction, etc.) that might damage the tree's root system.
