Where do I report sightings of giant hogweed? #564266

Asked May 24, 2019, 4:05 PM EDT

I walked around Font Hill Wetland Park near Rte. 40 in Ellicott City when I saw at least half a dozen of these plants. I understand one should report them but I don't know to whom.

Howard County Maryland

Expert Response

Hi- we think that you may be observing cow parsnip (Heracleum lanatum), a related plant that can cause a dermatitis reaction if handled.
Cow parsnip has solid green stems and giant hogweed has green stems spotted purple. The latter is also a much larger plant.

Please read about the differences on this page and let us know, if after closer examination, you think that it is giant hogweed.

Thank you!  It does seem to be cow parsnip as there is no hint of purple on it.  I appreciate the information.
