Raspberry shoots with no flowers #562591

Asked May 19, 2019, 11:25 AM EDT

I have a bed of red raspberries that have been highly prolific.  This is year 4 and a wet spring.  They normally have shoots than flower.  This time we are seeing about 30% of the shoots are much thicker, taller but have no flowers (on the same root base as those with flowers).  I have attached pictures showing the stalks highlighted and the other flowers.

Just wondering if this is normal, and part of the growth cycle we are seeing due to the plethora of rain this year.

Thanks in advance!!

Hello and thank you for choosing Ask An Expert.

Our friends at Oregon State Cooperative Extension have a great article pertaining to raspberries!  It may help you figure out your issue or you respond to this answer for further assistance.  https://catalog.extension.oregonstate.edu/sites/catalog/files/project/pdf/ec1306.pdf

If you do need further assistance please help us out by letting us know (if you know) what cultivar you have and when it/they normally bear(s) fruit.

It sounds like the soil is appropriate for growing your raspberries but it never hurts to get a soil sample done just to be sure.  Here is the information if you are so inclined:  http://extension.udel.edu/dstp/

Hope this helps!!
