Pruning a Ponderosa Pine tree #562309

Asked May 17, 2019, 10:47 PM EDT

We have two mature (40-45 feet tall) Ponderosa Pine trees.  We would like to cut off several large live branches that hang too close to our house.  These branches are growing primarily on the south side of the trees.  What is the best time of year to do this type of pruning?  We live in Monument, Colorado.

Thank you very much for your help.

Expert Response

Generally the best time to prune evergreens is late winter/ early spring. Since you are removing entire branches from this tree you can certainly do it right now. Pine trees will not regrow where you cut them so you do not have to worry as much about cutting too late in the season (to avoid winter kill of new growth in other species). Make sure you cut the branch all the way back to the branch collar, and do not remove more than 25% of the tree in any year. The following link will give you some more detail about exactly how to make the cut. https://static.colostate.edu/client-files/csfs/pdfs/618.pdf.
