What is the difference between a canker and a burl on a tree? What is the growth on the attached image. Thanks Fair Hill MD.

Expert Response

Canker is the more general term, meaning a dead area in the bark or stem of a plant.  It can be caused by many things.

A burl is a more specific term, but also has several causes. A virus, fungus or injury stresses the tree and the tree reacts with a mass of stunted buds that remain dormant and never develop.  This mass is woody and covered with bark.  It produces beautifully grained woods and is prized by woodworkers.
