Clear jelly like substance #559728

Asked May 09, 2019, 10:30 AM EDT

I woke up this morning to find one section of my yard by my open entryway. It looked like someone dumped ice chips but looking closer it was clear jelly like pieces. We have lived here for 3 yrs and have never seen it before and it’s in a sunny open spot.

Expert Response

You have me completely stumped on this one but am actively investigating it.

A few questions:

1).  Did this suddenly appear overnight?
2).  When you say "jelly" does this mean it is flexible and twistable?
3).  What types of trees are nearby?

Many thanks for your answers.

Hello
yes it wasn’t there at 10pm Wednesday night but was all over in a square area of the yard @7am.
it was like jello? You could squish it like jello
i put several in baggy and they froze in the freezer and thawed in frig to the way they were in the yard. Their still pieces on the yard also.
bot sure the kind of tree but this has never happened the entire 4 yrs I’ve lived here.

Their similar to the floral jelly things they put in vases. Orbits?

Well, frankly,  I don't know what this is,  I say this from the perspective of forty years of being a biologist.  It truly does seem to be inert.  I would simply discard it and I suspect that will be the end of things.  If it does reappear, which I doubt, please get back to us.

Good Luck!!

If these things reappear, please let us know and we will try to get to the bottom of things.

Thank you for the challenge.

Those look like the gel chips that gets put in planters to hold moisture. They are made of agar and if allowed to dry should shrivel.
