We have a fairly young Oak tree that was planted approximately 4 years ago. We believe it is a White Oak. Late last summer, it lost all leaves on the top half of the tree. This spring, only the bottom half has leafed out, with the top portion remaining leafless. The tree is no longer in warranty from the nursery. Is our tree dying? Please advise!

The top portion of the oak tree may be dead. The condition of the tree should be much clearer in 2 to 3 weeks. If the top portion of the tree has not leafed out by late May, the top portion is dead.
There are basically two options if the top portion of the tree is dead. One option is to remove it and plant another tree. Another option is to remove the top (dead) portion of the tree and give the tree another 2 to 3 years to grow. It could still develop into a nice tree. However, it is also possible that the tree will never recover. Option two is a gamble.
