grape leaf curl #556301

Asked April 27, 2019, 12:27 PM EDT

I have three rows of grapes, about 20 vines per row. Two rows are coming along relatively fine. The leaves on the north row are emerging with substantial curl. I have attached two pictures. The variety is cab franc. The other two rows also have cab franc vines which are not doing this curling.

I will apply a small amount of 24-25-4 fertilizer to each of the vines with curled leaves because in my googling curling seems to be either due to leaf curl virus for which nothing much can be done or nutrient deficiencies, of which P and K seem to be the main source. Any other suggestions?

Expert Response

You are correct that it could be a deficiency or virus.  However, you can also see this damage from several insects or from herbicide damage.  You could bring a sample either to myself and Meredith at the Extension office at 2775 Hwy 50, within the fairgrounds.  Meredith is our entomologist.  And I could send a sample off to campus to check for virus.  Or you could take a sample to Horst at the research center on B 1/2 road.  He is our grape researcher.  We will have an extension Viticulturist starting in about a month.  So sorry to hear this is going on.
