sowing seeds in the garden #555032

Asked April 22, 2019, 5:36 PM EDT

I have a raised bed that I intended to start planting soon. Which vegetables can I plant directly as seeds into the garden? And do I need to wait until after May 10?

New Castle County Delaware

Thank you for your question for eXtension.
Raised bed gardens are a wonderful idea for vegetable planting. In Delaware, the last frost for 2019 is expected to occur around 5/1 and 5/10. Regardless, there are a wide variety of vegetables that can be planted throughout the year.
Here are a few great resources from the University of Delaware Cooperative Extension and the University of Delaware College of Agriculture and Natural Resouces to aid in planning and planting your garden.

One additional idea which might be useful is soil testing. Soil testing provides insight into the soil needs for your raised beds relative to what your garden needs are. Here is a link about the benefits of soil testing- http://extension.udel.edu/dstp/
With these tools, you will be on the road to a successful vegetable garden in no time.
