Little dirt mounds all over yard #554767

Asked April 21, 2019, 8:01 PM EDT

Its early spring now and I just noticed hundreds of little dirt piles all over out back yard. Each pile has a small hole in the center of it and sometimes is about 2 inches tall or so and about and inch to 2 inches wide.

Expert Response

Hello,

The piles are earthworm castings(excrement), little piles of poop left after the earthworm goes back into its hole in the ground. The larger pile could be a group of them located in one area or a mole hill left by a mole coming to the surface to eat the worms.
