What kind of Beatle is this? #554637

Asked April 21, 2019, 12:37 AM EDT

Is this a borer beatle of some sort? I have never seen a beatle like this before.  It sounds like a bumblebee when it flys but not sure if I need to be worried about my trees, plant or shrubs?

Thanks, Brandon

Expert Response

Hi, this is Steve, and thanks for contacting Ask An Expert with your question. I am not completely certain I have identified your beetle, I do feel it could be an Eastern Hercules Beetle (female) although this might be a bit out of it’s range. At any rate, I AM certain this beetle will cause no harm in your landscape as the number of them would always remain small. Therefore, you don’t need to be concerned or take any measures toward controlling the beetle. If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Good luck.

This is Steve again, I asked another Master Gardener to help identify your beetle. Below is a link with that information. My thoughts on this being a harmelss visitor is still viable. Have a good weekend.    https://utahpests.usu.edu/uppdl/files-ou/factsheet/bumble-flower-beetle2011.pdf.

Hey Steve,
You guys are awesome, that is the beatle! I have been emailing with Judy (your co-worker) about conifer problems I have. Do you guys at your work go to a house to investigate trees? I know I have lilac ash borer, Zimmerman pine moth, but I'm still not sure what is attacking my blue sprue. I'm on the south west side of Carr Colorado and my trees are EVERYTHING to us! Please help

Thanks, Brandon

Yes, there is a team of Master Gardeners which make visits. The cost is $25 (possibly a bit more if it is an extended visit). There is a wait list and a limited number of people who provide this service. The best way to schedule is to reach out via the info below. Master Gardeners are in the office M/W/F from 9-1pm if you wish to visit or call then. Otherwise, there is an answering machine and email is always an option. They will not be able to directly schedule with you, but will take down needed information and pass it along. Over the phone or via email they might be able to help answer at least the first two of your issues above and you may also send them pics of the blue spruce - pictures of the entire tree in the landscape and of affected areas of the tree and as close up as possible. Also pics of the trunk where it goes into the soil can help. They may be able to give you thoughts on the problem with the spruce and save you the fee. Best of luck! Here is the info....
