strangler vine identification #554477

Asked April 20, 2019, 10:10 AM EDT

I have a woody vine in the woods that wraps tightly around the trees and strangles them. It pops up everywhere and looks like a small sapling. The roots are just under the surface until one of the "saplings" pops up, and they seem to grow for miles crisscrossing each other.

Expert Response

This looks like Oriental bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus), which is an invasive plant in Maryland. Refer to the following page and the links provided for options on managing it. https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/oriental-bittersweet

It spreads prolifically by seeds, so you may need to keep removing seedlings for a period of time to get it under control.
