I have a woody vine in the woods that wraps tightly around the trees and strangles them. It pops up everywhere and looks like a small sapling. The roots are just under the surface until one of the "saplings" pops up, and they seem to grow for miles crisscrossing each other.

It spreads prolifically by seeds, so you may need to keep removing seedlings for a period of time to get it under control.
