Is it possible to can Homemade Peanut Butter #550550

Asked April 02, 2019, 1:00 PM EDT

Can sugar free homemade peanut butter be canned?  If so, should it be canned in a water bath or pressure cooker and for how long?  Does the time need to be increased if canned at high altitude?

Hello,
Thank you for this question as it is a good one since more and more people are making their own nut butters at home.
It would not matter if it was sugar-free or sweetened peanut butter it is not safe or possible to can peanut butter.  The peanut butter you find in the stores is made under different conditions that you can not replicate at home.  Please do not try this!   Peanut Butter or any Nut Butter is too dense for it to be preserved at home through canning. Please also check out the site National Food Preservation Center or go to "state university extension and food preservation and canning low acid foods"   With that last search you will find information for State University Extension Services on food preservation.
