i have recently over the past few days been finding tiny grey bugs with black spots that almost look like ladybugs from a small distance does anyone know what these harmless pests are called and how to get rid of them

Hard to know without some indication of the beetle size. Take a look at this publication (http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/pdffiles/ig/ig08900.pdf) on carpet beetles. This may be what you have but from the picture it is not possible to be certain
