Expert Response

Thank you for your question. I need more information to give you advice; I could find no information about these plants in the Alabama Extension system. How old is the seedling? Have you kept it outdoors since you acquired it? Where did you get it from? I'm not sure of what care you have been or are giving the plant, so can only refer you to a general article about the care of these plants, and perhaps you can discern what you are doing that is inconsistent with their needs:  https://www.giant-sequoia.com/about-sequoia-trees/giant-sequoia-bonsai-care/

Write back if you still have questions. Good luck!

It's about three years old I have it in a 5 gallon bucket now it's mainly been Outdoors it came from Washington State the 5 gallon bucket has rocks in the bottom to help with drainage so I don't think it's any kind of root rot right now I'm in subtropical climate in Alabama which has a lot of humidity for my understanding according to a botanist down here that tree actually loves the humidity so I don't know that it would be that I don't know that it would be any kind of disease cuz there's not really a whole lot of diseases from my understanding for that tree

We did have a cold snap down here where the temperature is reached around 32 degrees and I don't know that that would have been the issue but it did that one week before and then it is for another week but on this tree I noticed that the couple of the branches started turning brown and then after the branches started turning brown I just noticed today that the actual trunk was turning a different color also but the branches are under a lot of greenery and it's above a lot of greenery so I don't know

Thank you for the further information. Are you saying that the container does not drain? We do not recommend putting rocks on the bottom of non-draining containers, since it has been shown not to be effective in helping drainage. Only letting the water flow through and out of the container will do that. If it does not drain, the chances of the fungus which causes 'root rot' go up. Here is another resource that might provide some ideas of what you can look for to see what's happening with your tree:  https://homeguides.sfgate.com/brown-leaves-redwoods-64362.html
