Flowering Currant leaf problem #494239

Asked November 12, 2018, 7:09 PM EST

From the attached leaf photos, can you tell us what is wrong with our flowering currant. Its leaves morph into this condition soon after leafing out--all summer. Is there something we can do to combat this? Thank you. Paul & Brenda Wertz Eugene

Expert Response

Currants get aphids very early in the season. The aphid feeding causes the leaves to have a very red color. The red color stays all summer.

Controls are - dormant oil in March.
Summer sprays of Neem oil, insecticidal soap, pyrethrins or spinosad sprays do a good job of controlling the aphids.

Planting a lot of nectar flowers will increase your aphid predator population and reduce the aphids in the general garden area.
