healthy maple tree with leaf rot or scale? #493850

Asked November 08, 2018, 10:00 AM EST

My parents live in Dallas and this beautiful maple has doubled in size in about 3 years. Although healthy, this fall, a few leaves have turned yellow.

I've read that it could be verticillium wilt that could kill the tree or anthracnose?

Can you give us guidance on how to diagnose and treat the tree?
Thank you!!

Howdy,

Thank you for submitting your question to our office. The pictured japanese maple may indeed have a fungal infection as a result of our wet weather these past couple of months. Diagnosing the tree would follow characteristics described here (https://plantdiseasehandbook.tamu.edu/landscaping/trees/maple/) to determine which disease seems most likely.

For your tree, did you see many of the leaves and branches turn and die at once, or has it been a more gradual process? If the leaves have spots on them that grow prior to the whole leaf dying then it may indeed be athracnose at fault.

Thanks,
