Large black larva #492979

Asked October 31, 2018, 12:50 PM EDT

Something has been digging up areas of lawn in our neighborhood. I found some sort of larva in one of these areas. I have included a picture.  There looks to be a pincer on the narrow end with two prongs and there are air holes on either side of the body of the larva.  What would be digging up the lawn and what is this larva? Thanks.

Expert Response

Wildlife such as skunks, raccoons, fox, etc.  are looking for soil insects this time of year.  This pupae could be a type of large caterpillar possibly a hornworm but we cannot say for sure.

This pupa is pretty big.  I'm thinking after further research maybe it's a Hawk Moth.  Your thoughts?  Thanks.
