What type of insect nest is this? #492928

Asked October 30, 2018, 10:42 PM EDT

I found two of these small "mounds" by my home - one in the rocky drainage area by the back of my house, and a smaller one on my deck. Both are similar - a black mass that isn't real high with red objects that look like berries imbedded in it. Can you tell me what this is, and what I should do about both of these "nests"?

Expert Response

This is not an insect nest:  It is racoon scat. You must have a few racoons in your area!
