Losing bark on my maple tree #490007

Asked October 12, 2018, 3:05 PM EDT

This tree was in my yard 35 years ago when I bought the house so I don't know how old it is. It is beautiful orange/red in the fall, not sure what the proper name is. The bark is coming off the bottom of the trunk and the bark is turning green. I know that's lichen, but is my tree in danger? I don't want to lose it, but I don't want it to fall on the house either!! Since I just discovered this issue, I intend to do some tree probing tomorrow to see how stable it is! What do you think?

Expert Response

Hello,

I would have the tree looked at by a certified arborist. The groundcover growing around the trunk is too close and should be pulled and hand pruned back so as to leave a 6-12 inch space around the trunk- 2-3 feet would be better. The area where the tree flares out and joins to the roots needs air to stay healthy. Under that groundcover may be more signs of trouble. This could be a rot that has entered the tree, causing the bark to die and fall off. Or there could be an insect pest.

The ‘co-dominant stems’ of the trunk may be an issue, too. These grow together and can affect the structure.

The arborist can assess the tree for structural integrity, pests and diseases; and make recommendations on whether the tree should stay or how it should be treated to extend its life. To find certified arborists in your zip code, search here-

You want an arborist who has been educated and past certification by the International Society of Arboriculture(ISA) or other professional organization, not just a tree service. Thank you for using our service.
