Clump River Birch #488116

Asked October 02, 2018, 12:31 PM EDT

We have a clump river birch with three trunks.  Would it injure/kill the tree if we were to entirely remove one trunk.  It is bending into our house.  We do not want to cut down or lose tree.
Thank you!!

Expert Response

Thank you for your question. It would be helpful to have a picture of the tree, with an indication of which trunk you intend to remove. I would recommend you have an arborist assess the tree to give you advice about the tree's viability. Although these trees are multi-trunked, and can live with fewer than the full complement, there might well be repercussions to the tree's health were it pruned unprofessionally. Here is an article about the plant and its preferences:  http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/st094

Thank you so much for your prompt reply.  As requested I have attached pictures of the tree we would like to address.

Thanks, Nancy.  What concerns me is the root (?) that is coming out from the trunks.  As I earlier indicated, I think consulting with a certified arborist (preferably someone who doesn't do the cutting) would be worth your while.  It could be that pruning out some of the higher branches will get the tree away from the structure without compromising the entire plant.  It is such a lovely tree that I know you would hate to ruin it!  Good luck!
