What kind of insect nest is this? #485533

Found this nest about 1 inch long on the garage side wall. What insect builds this? It has a layered characteristic and not cone shaped

That is a Praying mantis egg casing. A wonderful benifial insect that is extremely helpful in the home landscape and garden. The praying mantises typically feed on a wide variety of insects including aphids, moths, crickets, grasshoppers, flies and almost any other insect they can overtake.
