Spider? #484730

Asked September 13, 2018, 7:31 PM EDT

Hi I’m a custodian and I’m very familiar with the black widow spiders but I’ve been coming across these other spiders that I don’t recognize. They look like the black widow but instead of the red hourglass on the back it’s got white racing strips on it. Could you tell me what type of spider this is and if it’s dangerous or not?

Expert Response

What a beautiful spider. Sorry, I am not an expert in spider identification, and even less if the specimen is from outside the USA. But the spider shows features that may place it in the same family as black widows. Check out the genus Latrodectus .

Also, do a search using the following words:

Theridiidae black Europe (replace 'Europe' with your country, or continent).

I hope this helps,
