Azalea issues #483201

Asked September 06, 2018, 11:50 AM EDT

My friend has had these for years, in full sun and they have performed well. Pictures show leaves turning gray, yellow, brown with overall appearance unhealthy. She is requesting help with identifying problem and suggesting a solution.

Expert Response

The webbing in the azaleas is from spiders, which are normal good predators of insects -- nothing to be too concerned about. The yellowing/browning symptom in the foliage is very likely due to azalea lace bug damage. This is very common in azaleas, especially on ones that receive full sun. The following web page has information about this pest and what you can do to manage it. https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/lace-bugs-trees-and-shrubs
