What are the white dots on Del Monte canned Asparagus?. #482803

Asked September 04, 2018, 3:09 PM EDT

I called their 800 #. David told me the spots were rutin and that rutin was good for me. I looked up rutin  and found out that rutin would be very good for me. However, I don't know that the white spots are rutin. They look like pin head size dots of white mold to me. Would the bioflavenoid rutin survive the canning process? I need someone with experience to tell me their opinion. We are told not to eat canned food in question but Del Monte only gave me the alternative "the white spots being good for me." In 72 years I have never had anything like that in a can.

Expert Response

I spoke with 2 food scientists and they said it was not rutin (rutin is yellow in color).  There could be a number of reasons why there are white spots.  That doesn't mean the asparagus is unsafe, but out of an abundance of caution they recommended not eating eat.
