cockscomb celosia fasciated stems? #482639

Asked September 03, 2018, 9:16 PM EDT

I just realized today that my celosia has extremely abnormal stems. They look like a connected wire harness and go almost all the way up to the flower. I bought this plant at a Cub Foods plant tent earlier this summer and wondered why it was growing so big without flowering. Then it started blooming with huge flowers.

Expert Response

Your comments and photos illustrate unusual plant growth called fasciation. The following publication discusses this phenomenon in detail. It also notes that some kinds of celosia are bred to exhibit fasciation. We don't know whether that's the case with those shown in the photos.
