Catepillars #481350

Asked August 28, 2018, 10:59 AM EDT

What kind of caterpillars are these and how can I get rid of them? They have defoliated our small oak tree in one day.

Howard County Maryland

Expert Response

This is an orange striped oakworm.
They are late season defoliators and seem to be having a good year this year.
They are almost finished their work.
You can pick off and destroy any you can reach.
There is nothing you need to do. The tree should be able to recover, and you may never see them again. They are not always a problem, even in landscapes that have had them before.
