Our red maple tree is dropping dead, greyish-brown leaves, with many more still on the tree. Is this from the overabundance of rain, or a disease?

We can't discern from the photos whether the dead leaves are scattered more or less evenly over the tree or, as the second photo suggests, there is an affected branch here and there.
Yes, there is a lot of fungal disease (leaf spotting) from the weather conditions this year, but we don't see that. Also, let us know if the maple is in a low area where water stood for days or the soil was completely saturated with poor drainage.
