1 Doug Fir of 11 Browning, dripping sap #473446

Asked July 25, 2018, 11:26 PM EDT

Hi,
I have 11 Doug firs on my property, all pretty big trees, about 60-80 ft tall. One of them has been gushing sap since we purchased the house 3 years ago, but otherwise looked healthy. The whole tree just recently has started turning quite brown. Lots of brown needles all the way up, and even the green ones are noticably browner than on the surrounding trees. Is this tree done for? Or just struggling through the summer. Should I remove the tree? Or does it have a chance? Thanks!!

Expert Response

The dripping sap may be the result of whatever is ailing the plant but whatever the cause, the browning of the needles is an indication the tree is dying. Douglasfir does not recover from that. It will continue to decline and should be removed.
