Invasive species / fungus killing conifers #471539

Asked July 18, 2018, 4:57 PM EDT

I have property in Iron County with conifers and maples on it. Last year I noticed that some conifers are starting to die. What actions do I need to take to care for the existing trees? I was listening to telephone time the other day. They were talking about a program where a person would walk your property with you and explain the plants that you have and what to do to care for them. Do you know anything about this program? Thanks for your help, Jim Cwerenz <personal data hidden>

Hi Jim
Thanks for your inquiry. From the photo, it looks to be spruces that are being affected. There are a number of problems that may or may not be affecting your spruces. Without a closer look at the specific symptoms and/or signs, it's difficult to make a positive diagnosis. Here is a Michigan State University Extension resource that highlights some things affecting spruces: http://msue.anr.msu.edu/news/what_is_spruce_decline_and_what_should_you_do_about_it

There are also spruce budworms that affect them too: http://msue.anr.msu.edu/news/scout_now_for_spruce_budworm_feeding_on_new_growth

The program that you are referring to sounds like the Forestry Assistance Program offered through the Iron/Baraga Conservation District. Here is their website: http://www.ironcd.org/forestry---landowners.html
