Thank you for the question. You might enjoy planting rain garden type perennials in the area. Depending on whether the area is damp or has standing water, there are plants that can work. Water tolerant plants with extensive, deep, root structures will make good use of the moisture. The following resources offer many choices for your perusal:
1. http://extension.illinois.edu/beyond/directory_perennials_wet.cfm Good photos of plant options.
2. https://extension.psu.edu/trees-shrubs-and-groundcovers-tolerant-of-wet-sites Tree and shrub options listed.
3. https://extension.psu.edu/rain-gardens-the-plants This publication gives plant options for areas with standing water to areas that are like moist garden soil.
Thank you for contacting Extension.
Anita, thanks so much for your help. We've been been looking at all the options on those sites. Sue Horoshak
