Dwarf Korean lilac tree died #469955
Asked July 12, 2018, 6:23 PM EDT
Our tree has died after 5 years. It was a bad winter and we thought the buds might have gotten damaged by a late frost. We live in Seneca County. It didn’t snap back. We aren’t sure if we should get another one or not. Any ideas, suggestions? Better choice for a dwarf tree. Photos this spring, spring 2017, blooms 2016. What happened?

Expert Response
Your plant is susceptible to loss of buds in a late freeze but should be a good plant in your area over all. Possible problems may have come from leaching of salts used on a nearby path or driveway into the lilac's soil or soil that is not draining adequately. I cannot see how high the pebble mulch is coming up the trunk but it should be moved away from the trunk to avoid excess moisture that can lead to rot and bacterial disease .
