Weeping Cherry Branches turning dry and dead #468652

Asked July 08, 2018, 6:11 PM EDT

I have a weeping cherry that was planted about 14 years back.  Suddenly this year lots of branches are turning brown, dry and dead...I have been pruning the dead branches. I notice tree sapping at a number of locations as well as leaves are developing holes.  What can I do to save the tree from further damage.

Expert Response

The leaves have one of the leaf spot diseases, but the worrying issue is the knots on the trunk. Cherry and other trees in the genus Prunus are susceptible to a disease called black knot. You need the advice of a licensed arborist to make a diagnosis and treatment plan. You can find one in your zip code by using the zip code locator on the website of the International Society of Arboriculture. Here is a link to their website.
