Hi, I am a Montgomery County MG. I have a friend who lives in Atlanta, GA. I know you are not an expert on that part of the country, but I wonder whether you have any idea what is "drilling" these dozens of very similar holes in their apple tree. The holes are approximately 1/8 of an inch deep. Thanks for any ideas you might have.

This is evidence of sapsuckers. The holes do not generally harm a tree. Here is a page telling about them: https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/woodpeckers-and-sapsuckers
