Please tell me this isn’t aster yellows! #467548

Asked July 03, 2018, 10:12 PM EDT

I have a large number of purple coneflowers in my yard. This year they’re showing some malformed blooms; missing/no petals, lighter than usual petals, malformed cones and a couple have green cones with no petals. Some of the leaves are curled, but are still nicely green. I’ve been reading about aster yellows and rosette mites, but am having trouble figuring out what my plants might have.

Expert Response

You seem to have done some homework on this. The websites below describe the yellow aster problem. What I don’t see in your pictures are the typical green leaves that invade the flower petals or the yellowing leaves. You could try and capture mites on fly paper. The best way to resolve this is to send a sample to the plant disease clinic. Another option is to take a sample to a Ramsey County Master Gardener diagnostic clinic.
