What is this plant or weed that is invading our newly planted meadow? #466107

Asked June 28, 2018, 11:29 AM EDT

We have a community meadow and just planted wildflower seeds about three weeks ago. In one corner of the meadow, this plant (see pictures) started to grow and we let it continue to grow, not knowing what it was. It started off looking like tiny fragile grass, then as the plants matured, the fronds of grass split and now we don’t know what we have. I don’t think it’s the California and red poppy seeds we spread almost three weeks ago. The stalks, or grass-like fronds are very delicate, maybe about three inches high now. Is this a weed or plant? Please note these are not flattish “blades” of grass, rather rounded

Expert Response

Can't ID it at this point.   Could you resubmit when it has formed a flower?    Or you could bring a sample into the Master Gardener Help Desk at the Extension Office.

Checked out the plant you brought into the OSU Newport office (you marked this plant #1).   Identified it as Corn Spurry (Spergula arvensis).  This is an annual plant that reproduces by seed.   To prevent spread,  do NOT let it go to seed.   Left you a voice message and sent you an email.
