Hello,
I have a Canadian Red Cherry that has some kind of fungus I think, it also has some black knot fungus on a couple smaller branches high up. I can cut those branches out easily whenever the time is right, (winter)?
The one that concerns me is attached, it has been spreading over the years, is there anything I can do or should I take the limb, if so when?

Expert Response
For the black knot on the high branches prune them out in the winter. Make sure to
cut back to healthy wood a good 4 to 6 inches below the knot. Disinfect your pruner between cut with a 10% bleach solution. I'm sorry I really couldn't see in the picture what was going on the trunk. You can contact the Cass County extension office if
someone could look at the tree. There should be master gardeners in your area
that can assist you.

The second picture is somewhat zoomed in, if you open full screen in a browser window you should be able to see it better and it should allow you to zoom in too.
I did zoom in but the picture is too dark to see any real detail. Getting someone to look at it is probably the best way to get an answer as to what it is.
