This looks like a canker - a symptom of many diseases.
For a more accurate diagnosis and management strategy, you will need to call an arborist - the Denver Forestry Service - (720) 913-0651 - has a listing of licensed specialists or the International Society of Arboriculture (www.isa-arbor.com) has a find an arborist function on their website.
