Is this Bishop's Goutweed? #464183
Asked June 21, 2018, 11:02 AM EDT
Hello,
This plant seems to be popping up everywhere around here...Beulah, Benzonia, Frankfort, Copemish, Elberta, etc. It seems to be pushing out native species and may even be taking over where Garlic Mustard has been growing. Can you tell me if it is Bishop's Goutweed and how to remove it?

Expert Response
Yes this is bishops weed. This garden thug will freely run rampant through native territory, so it should always be kept in check by gardeners and removed when necessary. It is not too difficult to control by using a glyphosate product once or twice. As always, the two best times to control weeds are the late summer/fall when these weeds are storing food reserves in their roots and now, when they are in bloom. I might take a crack at it right now and then watch to see what re-emerges for a fall treatment. Be aware!!--that glyphosate will kill any green tissue that it touches. It is a non-selective herbicide. you can protect desired species with hard plastic sheeting, flower pots, milk jugs etc.
