Control black medic in lawns #464022

Asked June 20, 2018, 6:45 PM EDT

I've spent almost an hour trying to find pictures and information on Black Medic, which I believe  is the weed taking over my yard. Is there a way to control it without killing the grass? I've read that white vinegar + epsom salts + dawn detergent is non toxic (to pets) and will knock it out. It will also kill some grass, but not all of it and the grass will come back. What do you think? It's ruining my lawn in Littleton.

Black medic is usually an indicator of compacted soil. If you can loosen the soil, this should help control the weed. Adding organic matter can also help. I can't recommend the control you list in your message since we have to give only research based information. You can use a broad-leaf weed killer on black medic without damage to the lawn as long as you apply according to the label. Keep pets off the area until the material you apply has dried.
