leaf problem on Eastern Redbud #463993

Asked June 20, 2018, 5:05 PM EDT

I have an Eastern Redbud tree that I bought in November 2016.  The tree flowered beautifully this spring. Also the tree leafed-out apparently without a problem, too.  However, during the last week or two, it was clear something was wrong with the leaves.   The leaves at the ends of many branches were wilting and curling up in a rather twisted fashion. I've attached three pictures that show typical views of leaves on this tree.
I looked online and the best fit that I could find for this problem was a Verticillium wilt fungal infection which affects the tree’s vascular system. The online resources also say there is no treatment against the fungus.
Can you help diagnose what is wrong and suggest a remedy? I would be most appreciative.

Expert Response

Hello,

From the pictures it appears to be herbicide injury, most likely lawn weed killers were applied nearby in the spring. The trees will take up the lawn chemicals and can be affected. There is not much to do at this point. It should not affect the long term health of the tree.
